Choosing a Design Team

Just as the casting team works far in advance to find the actors of a show, a director usually finds his design team between six months to a year in advance of a show.

There are usually four types of designers: Scenic, Lighting, Costume, and Sound. However, depending on what type of show it is, this creative team could also include:

-          A choreographer

-          A musical director

-          A fight coach/choreographer

-          A vocal/dialect coach

There are many different notions that could affect a director’s choice in designer:

-          A designer’s style

-          A director’s ideas on style

-          Either party’s past work

-          Past professional relationship
